This project, through researching both Christian art and the history of white supremacy and extreme nationalism in America, reproduces a classic Biblical scene with relevant, modern symbolism. As religion becomes a more prominent influence in American politics, we see Christianity, which famously teaches nonviolence, being used to justify increasingly violent and inhumane acts.
When Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on God’s orders, he believed he was doing the right thing in the name of a trustworthy, just God. This project depicts what might have happened if God hadn’t intervened and stopped Abraham from killing his son, and Abraham was left with the consequences of his own violent act. This project calls attention to the choices that we all make, and the things that we let guide and motivate us.
